He was born at Kirdels, Knockando on the 28th of April 1900 the second son of Robert (a farmer) and Charlotte (nee Kelly) Dawson of Mains Farm Knockando, later of 4 Fife Street, Dufftown.

He was educated at Knockando Public School after which he was employed as a wool miller before enlisting in the army at Rothes as Private 1318 in the 6th (Morayshire) Battalion Seaforth Highlanders in December 1912. He was later transferred to the 2nd Battalion of his regiment.

On the 11th of April 1917 the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders was ordered to attack the Chemical Works at Roeux. They sustained 93% casualties and lost all their officers from the three attacking companies with Lieutenant Donald Macintosh winning the VC
