He was born in Pulteney, New York USA on the 2nd of May 1889 the son of Alexander and Mary Gibbon.

He returned from New York with his mother on board the SS "Anchoria" landing at Glasgow on the 22nd of March 1893.
He was educated at Knockando Public School and later lived at Ringorm, Craigellachie where he moved when he was fourteen. On leaving school he became a farm worker.

He enlisted in Elgin on the 14th of June 1916.

On the 11th of May the battalion returned to the area east of Fampoux to a position which they had taken once before but was now back in enemy hands.

On the night of the 13th the battalion pushed forward and occupied the eastern end of the village of Rouex. They retook the area although snipers hidden in the houses caused some difficulties but these were wiped out through a combination of counter sniping and rifle grenades.

Although the battalion history describes the battalion as having "scarcely any casualties", one of the few was Leopold Gibbon.
