John Stuart McDonald was born at Aberlour on the 3rd of June 1884 the son of John McDonald, a road overseer, and Annie Margaret McDonald of Tomdow, Knockando.

He worked as a labourer before enlisting into the army at Elgin on the 17th of November 1914. He embarked for France on the 12th of May 1915.
