He was born at Mannoch, Knockando on the 20th of December 1882 the second son of John, gamekeeper to Knockando House, and Annie Shand (nee Stuart) of Carron.

He was educated at Knockando Public School after which he moved to Canada where he became a farmer.

He had served for 6 years as a territorial with the Seaforth Highlanders before moving to Canada and he enlisted for war service at Winnepeg on the 2nd of January 1915.
On his attestation form he was listed as being 5 feet 10 inches in height and as having grey eyes a dark complexion and brown hair.

He died from the effects of gas poisoning at the 3rd London General Hospital.

He was married to Ina (nee Duncan) Shand.

His brothers, Private Alexander Shand No. 2 New Zealand Field Ambulance, was killed in action on the 12th of October 1917 and Acting Lance Corporal James Shand Corps of Military Police, Mounted Section died on the 1st of December 1918.
