He was born at Millhaugh, Knockando on the 18th of December 1887 the fourth son of John, gamekeeper to Knockando House, and Annie (nee Stuart) Shand of Carron.

He was educated at Knockando Public School.

He lived in Wandsworth in London where he worked as a postman and enlisted in Wandsworth in November 1914. He was awarded the Mons Star.

He was married to Helen (nee Oxenham) of Ashted in Surrey and they lived at 8, Chatteris Square, New Kent Road, London. They had a son, Gordon Stuart, born in 1914 and died on the 20th of February 1917.

He contracted pneumonia and died at Lille, having served overseas for four years.

His brothers, Private Alexander Shand No 2 New Zealand Field Ambulance, was killed in action on the 12th of October 1917 and Lieutenant Donald Shand, 43rd Battalion Canadian Infantry, died of wounds on the 2nd of November 1918.

He is remembered on his son's grave at St Giles' Church, Ashtead.
