He was born at Tomintoul in Banffshire the only son of Thomas and Annabella Stewart on the 17th of March 1892 moving to Dalmunach Carron when he was three.

He was educated at Knockando Public School after which he worked as a clerk at Tamdhu Distillery. He enlisted in to the Seaforth Highlanders at Elgin on the 29th of January 1915 and embarked for France on the 24th of June 1915.

He was gassed in August 1915 and was killed in the fighting for Delville Wood.
