He was born at Parkhead, Knockando on May the 29th 1898 the son of James Alexander and Isabella Jane Stewart of Parkhead.

He was educated at Knockando Public School and, on leaving, worked as a farm servant.

He enlisted in the army at Elgin on the 19th of December 1916.

At noon on the 23rd of November 1917 Colonel Plunkett, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards received orders to clear Bourlon Wood near Cambrai "at all costs". The attack went in at 2pm, unsupported by artillery or trench mortars. The right hand company suffered very badly losing all its officers and sergeants to machine gun fire. The battalion achieved its objective despite the losses and held the line until the night of the 25th/26th when they were relieved.

Casualties were 2 officers killed and two wounded along with 17 other ranks killed, 65 wounded and 9 missing.
