James Craig Allardyce was born at Dublin on the 11th of May 1899 the third son of George Allardyce, a tailor, and Janet (nee Swirles) Allardyce of Viewmount, Archiestown, later of Advie, 65, Grosvenor Road, Rathgar in Dublin

He was educated at St Andrew's College, Booterstown, Dublin. He went on to the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich from where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on the 26th of August 1916. He was promoted to Captain on the 26th of February 1918.
He served with the Indian Mountain Artillery in India, in the Mediterranean and in Iraq. He was wounded in France during the Great War and ended the war with the rank of Captain. He saw service on the North West Province

He was seconded as a Lieutenant for service in the Auxiliary Forces in India as an Adjutant on the 1st of March 1927 and was promoted to Captain on the 26th of August 1929. He was appointed as an Adjutant on the 1st of January 1936 and was seconded again on the 1st of August 1938.

He was married at Lucknow in 1924 to Kathleen Louise (nee O'Neill), later of Keighley. They had a son.

During the Second World War he saw service in Syria, Assam, Burma and latterly in Ceylon from where he was sent home due to a breakdown in his health. He died suddenly at the Military Hospital Fulford, York.

He is commemorated on the war memorial at St Andrew's College.
