John "Jock" Cameron was born in Banffshire in 1909 the son of James Cameron and Annabella Cameron of Parkmore Farm, Dufftown in Moray. He was married to Mary Ann (nee Marshall) and they lived at 9 Imperial Cottages, Carron. He worked as a distillery worker at the Dailuaine Distillery.

At the time John Cameron was killed the 6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders were fighting high up in the mountains of Italy. All supplies were moved by mules due to the terrain and a heavy toll of both men and animals were killed by enemy shell fire as they pursued the German rearguard.
