James George Robertson was born at Heathfield, Elchies on the 27th of September 1891 the son of Robert Alexander Robertson and Jane Robertson of Woodside, Elchies. He was employed as a maltman.

He enlisted into the Territorial Army at Archiestown in 1912 and was mobilised on the 4th of August 1914. He embarked with his battalion at Folkestone at 8.30pm on the 1st of May 1915 arriving at Boulogne in the early hours of the morning the following day.

On the 15th of July 1915 the 1/6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders moved into the front line at Laventie where they were to spend the following week. They were plagued by snipers and attacks from trench mortars. It was during this spell in the trenches that James Robertson was wounded and he died in hospital at Merville.
