Charles Reginald Bent Aked was born at Apperley Bridge in Yorkshire on the 13th of April 1879 the son of Major Thomas Aked, Manchester Regiment, and Mary Elizabeth (nee Davis) Aked of Shipley in Yorkshire. He was christened at St Paul's Church, Shipley on the 6th of May 1879.

He was educated at Hazelwood School until December 1892 when he went on to Haileybury School where he was in Thomason House from April 1893 to December 1894.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion (Prince of Wales Own) West Yorkshire Regiment on the 2nd of February 1898 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 12th of June 1899. On the 13th of February 1900 he transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

He embarked for service in South Africa on the 2nd of April 1900 as part of the third draft for the 2nd Battalion of his Regiment. He landed in South Africa on the 10th of May 1900 and proceeded to Bloemfontein. On the 8th of June 1900, Boer Forces under De Wet captured Vredefort Station. Charles Aked was part of the forces which attacked the Station and drove the Boers out but the Boers counterattacked and drove the British forces back to Kromelling Spruit where they spent the next year. They rejoined their Battalion on the 8th of May 1901. He was placed in command of a section on Mounted Infantry from the 1st of June to the 25th of August 1901 when he returned to his Battalion.
