William Gerdes Shout was born at Northampton on the 27th of October 1878 the eldest son of William Cooley Shout, a bank manager, and Louise Maria Ann (nee Gerdes) Shout of 10 George Row, Northampton. He was christened at All Saints Church, Northampton on the 26th of December 1878.

He was educated at Hazelwood School and at Marlborough College where he was in Preshute House from September 1892 to July 1895.

He was married in Calcutta to Daisy Grace (nee Jones).

He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Cavalry Branch of the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on the 23rd of August 1915. He was promoted to Captain on the 23rd of August 1918.

He retired from the army due to ill health on the 6th of February 1920, retaining the rank of Captain, and died in Marseilles in November 1925.
