He was educated at Hazelwood School until July 1899 where he was a member of the 2nd Football XI in 1898 and was a member of the Cricket XI in 1899. The school magazine wrote the following of his 1899 cricket season: - "His place at the bottom of the averages is no sort of indication of his true merits as a batsman, which are far above the average of a new choice. He has been consistently unlucky in matches. Moderate field and bowler."

On leaving the school the magazine wrote of him: - "Betakes himself to Rugby and without being as yet brilliant in any department is quite likely to be head of both in school and on the cricket field."

He went on to Rugby School where he was in Mr. Brooke's House from September 1899 to July 1902 when he went on to Downton Agricultural College at Salisbury in Wiltshire. He worked as an estate agent.

He disembarked at Gallipoli in November 1915 and was promoted to Temporary Captain on the 9th of November 1917. He was mentioned in despatches (home) in September 1918. He resigned his commission on the 28th of May 1921 and left the army with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant.

He was married to Susan Catherine (nee Tooth) the widow of Lieutenant Colonel Percival Naylor Kent of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, at Beckenham Parish Church on the 16th of September 1919.
