John Reginald Taylor was born at Kensington on the 14th of October 1893 the elder son of Lewis William Taylor, a solicitor, of 1 New Square, Lincoln's Inn London WC, and Alice de Courcy (nee Meade) Taylor of 33 Roland Gardens, London SW.

He was educated at Hazelwood School until April 1907 where he was a member of the Choir. On leaving the school the school magazine wrote the following on him: - "....goes to Rugby (Dewar's), where he starts in LM2. We shall miss his leadership in the choir very much. He should develop into a musician some day."

He went on to Rugby School where he was in Dewar's House from May 1907 to July 1908.

Following the outbreak of war he entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) on the 20th of October 1915. He was posted to the 1st Battalion of his regiment. On the 22nd of November 1915 he passed his Aviators Certificate (No. 2079) at the Military School at Farnborough while flying a Maurice Farman Biplane. He was later promoted to Lieutenant. He was wounded in May 1917

In 1921 he was living at 5, Elm Park Road, Chelsea in London SW3 and, in later life, he lived at 28, Douglas Street in Edinburgh.

He died at Charing Cross Hospital.
