John Keith -Murray was born on the 2nd of March 1881 the fourth son of Patrick Keith-Murray 8th Baronet of Ochtertyre, and Ione Campbell (nee Penney) of Aberturret, Crieff in Perthshire.

He left Hazelwood School in December 1894 for Harrow School where he was in Mr Moss' House from January 1895 to April 1898. He became a writer.

He attested as Private 79452 in the 133rd Labour Company, Army Service Corps at Whitehall in London on the 20th of November 1915. At a medical examination, which took place on the same day, it was recorded that he was five feet nine inches tall. He was called up for service on the 13th of March 1916 and was posted to the 28th Labour Company before being attached to the 101st Training Battalion on the 11th of August 1916. He returned to the 28th Labour Company on the 17th of October 1916 and was posted to the 25th Labour Company on the 12th of March 1917.

He embarked for service in France on the 18th of March 1917 and landed there later the same day. He transferred to the 132nd Labour Company on the 14th of May 1917. He was admitted to 88 Field Ambulance (ICT Lags) on the 28th of September 1917 and was admitted to No. 6 Casualty Clearing Station on the 1st of October 1917. He was admitted to 7 Canadian General Hospital at Etaples on the 4th of October 1917. He re-joined his unit from hospital on the 18th of January 1918. He was admitted to 2 Field Ambulance on the 6th of February 1918 suffering from scabies and transferred to a Casualty Clearing Station later the same day where he was treated for impetigo. He returned to his unit in the field on the 25th of March 1918. Posted to the 257th Area Employment Company on the 10th of April 1918 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 10th of May 1918. He went on leave to England from the 4th to the 18th of June 1918 and went on leave to Paris from the 2nd to the 9th of October 1918. He returned to England on the 18th of February 1919 and was demobilised on the 20th of March 1919.
