Lionel Gipps Hopkins Furber was born on the 10th of July 1878 the son of Charles Furber, a land agent, and Emily Darrell Louisa (nee Turner) Furber of 9 Cavendish Mansions, Portland Place in London. He was christened at St Mark's Church, Westminster on the 12th of February 1879.

He was educated at Hazelwood School until April 1892 and at Charterhouse School where he was in Robinites and Lockites from May 1892 to July 1896. He entered Gonville and Caius College Cambridge on the 12th of October 1897 where he studied medicine. He was registered on the Medical and Dental Students Register on the 28th of April 1898. On leaving university he entered St Bartholomew's Hospital and achieved LMSSA (Lond.) in 1908.

He was married in Surrey in 1906 to Edith Mary (nee Stroud); they had a son, Lionel Brian, born on the 14th of October 1906 and two daughters, Marjorie Kathleen, born on the 18th of September 1908 and Joan Doreen, born on the 10th of August 1910. The family lived at Wargrave Road, Twyford in Berkshire.

He served as Hon Surgeon at Essex County Hospital before entering private practice at Twyford. During the Great War he worked as a civilian surgeon at Reading War Hospital No. 2 (Battle School).

He died at Dunedin Nursing Home in Bath.
