He was born at Newbridge, County Kildare in Ireland on the 11th of June 1876 the eldest son of Major Thomas Henry Jones, of the Cavalry Depot, Canterbury, and Mary Ann Elizabeth (nee Hathway) of 12 Sea View Terrace, Westbrook, Margate in Kent.

He was educated at the King's School Canterbury from 1887 to 1894 where he was a Junior Scholar and became a Senior Scholar in 1893.

He went on to the Royal Military College Sandhurst in 1894 and on leaving was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment on the 25th of March 1896. He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 10th of April 1897 and transferred to the Indian Army on the 29th of October 1897. He was promoted to Captain in the 79th Carnatic Infantry on the 1st of March 1905.

During his military career he served with the 11th Madras Infantry and with 94th Russell's Infantry. He was promoted to Major on the 1st of March 1914 and he retired from the Indian Army on the 12th of August 1914, joining the Indian Army Reserve of Officers.

He later rejoined the army and saw service as Post Commandant at Nairobi in British East Africa (Kenya). He died at Trans Nzoia, Kenya.

He was awarded the Order of the British Empire and was twice mentioned in despatches.
