He was born at New Brompton, Kent on the 26th of June 1894 the son of Major Thomas Carlyle, Army Ordnance Corps, and Edith (nee Nash) of 13 Blomfield Court, Maida Vale, London.

He was educated at Alton School, Plymouth and at the King’s School Canterbury from January 1908 to March 1909 where he was in School House. He later studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps.

He was commissioned as a Probationary Surgeon in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the 21st of February 1916 and served on the torpedo boat destroyer HMS Relentless from the 1st of September 1916.

He died of pneumonia at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
