He was born at Calcutta, India on the 21st of October 1913 the only son of John Laurence Winterton, artist, and Muriel Sudweeks (nee Walker) of 20, Park Street, Calcutta, later of 173, Clensham Lane, Sutton in Surrey. He was educated at Magdalen Court School, Broadstairs and at the King's School Canterbury from September 1927 to July 1930. He was a member of the Junior Fours Rowing team and was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He lived at 45, Congress Road, Abbey Wood, London SE2. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and rose to the rank of Acting Corporal before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on the 21st of February 1940. He is not currently commemorated on the war memorial at the King's School Canterbury. |
