He was born at Sandwich on the 29th of August 1911, the son of John Royle Linell, brewery manager, and Marian (nee Watson) of 54, Strand Street, Sandwich, Kent, later of 3, St John's Lane, Canterbury, and of Norton on Tees, County Durham.

He was educated at the Junior King's School from September 1920 and at the King's School Canterbury from September 1924 to July 1928, where he was a dayboy.

On leaving school he went into banking and lived at 119, South Croxted Road, Norwood.

On the outbreak of war he enlisted as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery and was sent for training to the Honourable Artillery Company, 121st Officer Cadet Training Unit. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on the 18th of May 1940 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 18th of November 1941. He was promoted to Captain in 1943, being attached to the Indian Army Service Corps. He was mortally wounded during the advance into Burma to capture Mandalay and Meiktila.

He was mentioned in despatches for his service in Burma on the 5th of April 1945.

He is commemorated on the war memorial at West Hartlepool.

The spelling of his name on the memorial is incorrect.
