Francis Adolphus Hamilton Browne was born at Montego Bay in Jamaica on the 4th of April 1898 the eldest son of Austin Hamilton Browne JP and Beatrice Alice (nee Groom) Browne of Montego Bay.

He was educated at Lancing College where he was in Gibbs House from September 1912 to July 1914 and was a member of the Officer Training Corps.

He enlisted on the 11th of May 1916 at Whitehall in London giving his address as 39 Tavistock Square. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall and gave his age as 18 years and one month although the attesting officer put his age at 19.

On the 22nd of May he was posted to No.7 Artillery Training School at Winchester with the rank of Gunner. On the 14th of June he was promoted to Acting Bombardier 139953 although this was unpaid.

On the 17th of June he was posted to 182nd Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery and his appointment of Acting Bombardier became paid on the 1st of July. He landed in France on the 29th of September 1916 and joined the 114th Heavy Battery at the front on the 3rd of October reverting to the rank of Gunner on the 8th. On the 19th of November 1917 he was posted to base and on the 26th of November he was posted to 145th Heavy Battery with the rank of Acting Bombardier.

He was killed at Chapel Hill.
