Nicholas Basil Heygate was born at Marylebone, London on the 14th of October 1909 the eldest son of Charles Basil Heygate OL, General Manager of the Canteen and Mess, Co-op Society, and Nellie Frances (nee Berrow) Heygate of Brinklea, Lower Shiplake, Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. He was christened at Holy Trinity Church, Westminster on the 1st of December 1909.

He was educated at Lancing College where he was in Gibbs House from September 1923 to July 1927.

On leaving school he sailed for Southern Africa from Southampton on board the SS "Kildonan Castle" on the 16th of November 1928 where he became a farmer. He returned to the UK and was married at Winchester to Lydia Mary (nee Edwards) and returned to Southern Africa with his bride from London on the board the SS "Umtata" on the 8th of April 1938. They lived at 66 Duncan Road, Bulawayo in Rhodesia.

He enlisted as Aircraftman 2nd Class 778608 in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and was posted to No. 22 Service Flying Training School as a driver.

He died from heart failure following ashmatic bronchitis at the Johannesburg Military Hospital, Cottesloe.
