Edward Le Marchant Trafford was born at Bath, Somerset on the 14th of October 1845 the eldest son of Major General Thomas Samuel Trafford and his second wife, Maria (nee Le Marchant) Trafford of Plas Panthowell, in Carmarthen. He was christened at St Swithin's Church, Walcot on the 7th of November 1845. He was educated at Lancing College from August 1860 to December 1862 where he was a member of the Cricket XI in 1861 and 1862. He was commissioned as an Ensign by purchase in the 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) on the 12th of December 1865 and was posted to the 1st Battalion of his Regiment. He served in the UK from the date of his commission and was posted to the Cape of Good Hope from March 1866 until July 1867 when he returned to England. He was promoted to Lieutenant by purchase on the 9th of April 1870 and later served as Battalion Adjutant. He served in the Afghan Campaign of 1878-1880 where he took part in operations during the second Bazar Valley expedition at the end of January 1879. The expedition lasted for ten days during which time daily skirmishes took place with tribesmen of the Zakka Khel clan of the Afridi tribe. He was awarded the Afghan campaign medal. He was promoted to Captain on the 20th of February 1880 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion from the 1st of May 1880. He served as Adjutant of the Battalion from the 9th of March 1882 to 1883 and was promoted to Major on the 12th of December 1883. He died at Rawalpindi. |
