Edward Le Marchant Trafford was born at Bath in Somerset on the 14th of October 1845 the eldest son of Major General Thomas Samuel Trafford and his second wife, Maria (nee Le Marchant) Trafford of Plas Panthowell, in Carmarthen. He was christened at St Swithin's Church, Walcot on the 7th of November 1845.

He was educated at Lancing College from August 1860 to December 1862 where he was a member of the Cricket XI in 1861 and 1862.

He was commissioned as an Ensign by purchase in the 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) on the 12th of December 1865 and was promoted to Lieutenant by purchase on the 9th of April 1870. He served in the UK from the date of his commission and was posted to the Cape of Good Hope from March 1866 until July 1867 when he returned to England. He was promoted to Captain on the 20th of February 1880. He served as Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion of his regiment from the 9th of March 1882 to 1883 and was promoted to Major on the 12th of December 1883.

He served in the Afghan Campaign of 1878-1880, for which he was awarded the campaign medal, and died at Rawalpindi in India.
