Henry Grove Snowden was born at Ramsgate on the 25th of March 1844 the son of Thomas Hodges Grove Snowden, a solicitor, and Sophia (nee Harrison) Snowden of 2 Chapel Place, Ramsgate in Kent.

He was educated at Lancing College from January to December 1861 where he was a member of the Cricket XI in 1861.

He joined the Royal Navy as an assistant clerk on the 14th of March 1862 and was promoted to Assistant Paymaster on the 13th of June 1866.

On the 4th of October 1876 he was posted to the troopship HMS Tamar where he saw service in the Basuto and Zulu war of 1877 to 1879 and was awarded the South Africa Medal. In 1871 he was serving on board the troopship HMS Crocodile. He was promoted to Paymaster on the 5th of January 1881 while serving on board the gunboat HMS Foam.

He lived at "Wellesley", Belgrave Crescent, Torquay in Devon where he died.
