Robert Jasper Selwyn was born at Sheffield, Yorkshire on the 1st of June 1927 the eldest son of the Reverend Ernest William Selwyn, Rector of Old Alresford, and Alice Kathleen (nee Adams) Selwyn of the Rectory, Old Alresford in Hampshire.

He was educated at Lancing College from May 1941 to April 1944 where he was in Gibbs House. He was appointed as a House Captain in 1944.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on the 23rd of March 1947 and saw service in Palestine.

He was killed in a motor cycle accident at Four Marks near Medstead in Hampshire, on the road between Alton and New Alresford.

He is buried with his parents.
