William Aldis Dennant was born at West Kensington on the 26th of May 1876 the son of John Dennant, a dental surgeon, and Eliza Ann (nee Hall) Dennant of 55 St Aubyn's, Hove in Sussex.

He was educated at Lancing College where he was in School House from May 1890 to July 1894. On leaving school he took the examinations for entry to dental school in December 1894 and was enrolled as a dental student at Sussex County Hospital on the 17th of April 1897.

He attested for service in the Imperial Yeomanry at the Pall Mall Deposit Building at Carlton Street, Kensington on the 14th of February 1901. At a medical examination, which took place on the same day, it was recorded that he was five feet nine and a half inches tall and that he weighed 143lbs. It was also recorded that he had dark brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He embarked for service in South Africa on the 16th of March 1901 where he joined the 18th battalion, Imperial Yeomanry.

He died of enteric fever at Bloemfontein.
