John Gordon Gwennap Moore was born in County Limerick on the 26th of June 1910 the son of Colonel Herbert Tregosse Gwennap Moore MG DSO Royal Engineers, and Ethel Freda (nee Phillips) Gwennap Moore of "Summerhill", Shawford in Hampshire.

He was educated at Lancing College from September 1923 to July 1928 where won a scholarship and was in Seconds House. He was a member of the Officer Training Corps and achieved Certificate A in 1927. He achieved his School Certificate in 1925 and 1st MB in 1928. He went on to Gonville and Caius Cambridge from 1928 to 1931, achieving a BA in 1931 and a MA in 1947.

He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer (on probation) in the Royal Air Force Reserve of Officers on the 18th of March 1929 and entered the Central Flying School on the same day on an aviation introductory course. He was described in a report as - "Steady, reliable. Quite satisfactory." He left the school on the 12th of September 1929 and was confirmed in his rank on the 8th of April 1930. He was promoted to Flying Officer on the 18th of September 1930. He was granted a regular commission in the Royal Air Force on the 26th of September 1931 with the rank of Pilot Officer and with seniority from the 26th of September 1930. He was promoted to Flying Officer on the 26th of March 1932 and to Flight Lieutenant on the 1st of April 1936.

He was married at Barnstaple, Devon on the 24th of June 1939 to Leonore Anne (nee Trechman) and they lived at 24, Queensborough Terrace, Bayswater, London W2.

He was promoted to Squadron Leader on the 1st of April 1939 and served at the Air Ministry. He was promoted to Wing Commander in 1950.

He died in London.
