David Claude Harper was born in Yorkshire on the 6th of November 1926 the elder son of Colonel Claude William Harper, Royal Military Police, and Emily Jenkinson (nee Trickett) Harper of "Byways", Lindenthorpe Road, Broadstairs in Kent.

He was educated at Lancing College from September 1940 to July 1944 where he was in Heads House and was a member of the Officer Training Corps.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the King's Own Royal Regiment on the 2nd of December 1945 and was later promoted to Lieutenant. He was killed in a climbing accident at Cobra Mountain, Kalyan in India and was buried on the 25th of October 1947.
