Harry Lefevre Ryder was born in Brighton on the 28th of March 1844 the third son of the Reverend Henry Dudley Ryder, Canon of Litchfield and Eliza Julia (nee Tucker) Ryder. He was christened at the Chapel Royal in Brighton on the 26th of July 1844.

He was educated at Lancing College from August 1852 to December 1855.

He joined the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet, serving with the gunnery training ship HMS Illustrious on the 5th of December 1857 where he completed his training on the 17th of December 1858. He served at the shore establishment HMS Victory from the 19th of December 1858 until the 4th of January 1859 and was posted to the 92 gun second rate HMS Orion on the 5th of January 1859, serving with her until the 6th of November 1860. He was appointed as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy on the 26th of March 1860 and joined the crew of the cruiser HMS Phaeton based at Sheeness on the 7th of November 1861. He was commissioned as an Acting Sub Lieutenant on the 15th of December 1863 and was promoted to Sub Lieutenant on the 15th of December 1864.

On the 15th of March 1865 Harry Ryder was brought before a court martial where he was charged with striking Mr Larcome, Carpenter of the Ship, on the 23rd of September 1864 and of striking Midshipman Lacoste on the 23rd December 1864. He was sentenced to
