Alexander Townsend Jackson was born at Calcutta on the 18th of November 1869 the fourth son of Justice Elphinstone Jackson, of the High Court, Calcutta, and Anna Madeline Hungerford (nee Jackson) Jackson of Osborne Villas, 7, Osborne Road, Windsor. He was christened at Kiddepore on the 24th of January 1870.

He was educated at Lancing College from September 1881 to July 1884 where he was in Heads House.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment (Militia) on the 4th of February 1888 and transferred to the regular army with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Worcestershire Regiment on the 9th of September 1891. He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 1st of January 1893.

He was married at St Peter's Church, Hampstead to Edith Emily Falconer (nee Urquhart) on the 18th of December 1900 but they had no children; they lived at 45, Devonshire Street, Portland Place, London.

He was seconded for service with the West African Frontier Force from the 2nd of September 1899 to 1902 and took part in the expeditions to the hinterland of Sierra Leone and the Ashanti Rebellion in March 1900.

During the Aro Expedition in South Nigeria of 1901/02, he commanded No. 1 Column which consisted of 16 Europeans, 300 native soldiers and 548 carriers. The column (one of four) gathered at Oguta on the 1st of December 1901 with orders to march on Oweri where they arrived on the 5th of December having met no opposition en route. On the 9th of December they merged with No. 3 Column and marched to Bende, without opposition, on the 16th of December. By the end of December enemy resistance had been crushed and the fighting became scattered in the early part of 1902. On the 23rd of March 1902 operations ceased.

He returned to his regiment and was promoted to Captain on the 15th of November 1902.

He died in London of illness contracted on active service.
