John David Calcutt Milling was born in Hertfordshire on the 13th of June 1922 the only son of Lieutenant Colonel John McMaster Milling MC, Bedfordshire Regiment, and Lorna Pauline (nee Brampton) Milling, of “Four Winds”, Tilford in Surrey.

He was educated at Lancing College where he was in Seconds House from May 1936 to 1940. He was a member of the Shooting VIII in 1938 and 1939 and gained his School Certificate in 1939. He was appointed as a House Captain in 1940. He went on to Magdalene College Cambridge.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on the 15th of November 1941 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 1st of October 1942.

He was killed in an accident in India.

His Commanding Officer wrote:-

"He was the most conscientious officer I have ever had under my command and the accuracy of his work was incredible. At any time when I wanted a job well done I invariably sent David to do it and then forgot about it, as I knew the job would be well done. He was an example of uprightness of character and quiet, unassuming competence to us all"

He is commemorated on the war memorial at Tilford, on the memorial at Magdalene College Cambridge and on a stained glass window at the Holy Cross Church, Aston Keyes in Wiltshire.
