Benjamin Grant Smith was born at Warlingham in Surrey on the 11th of May 1912 the only son of Benjamin Harold Smith, a corn broker, and Norah Preston (nee Farquhar) Smith of Edge Hill, Warlingham, later of “Casa”, Lower Bourne, Frensham in Surrey. He was christened at All Saints Church, Warlingham on the 20th of June 1912.

He was educated at Lancing College where he was in Olds House from January 1926 to July 1931. He was appointed as a House Captain in 1930 and was a member of the Athletics team in 1931.

He worked in horticulture in Scotland and lived in Glasgow. He died at the Fitzoy Nursing Home, 16, Fitzroy Square in London.
